Kuhns making fabric hospital masks to donate to local hospitals

Colie Kuhns of Arthur, owner of Mint Mountain Creations, is making fabric hospital masks to donate to our local hospitals in the area.

Kuhns says she knows for certain Carle, HSHS St. Mary’s, DMH, and HSHS St. John’s in Springfield are all accepting them. She has had local doctor’s offices and nursing homes also reaching out to her about the masks.

The idea came from her sister Tory Kuhns who saw it on the HSHS St. John’s Facebook page. The hospital had posted a list of COVID-19 supplies needed and on that list was clean, handmade masks. Kuhns stated, “I new immediately this was something I could do to help while quarantined at home.”

She has plenty of fabric for now but needs help with the material that goes inside to help keep the germs out. “The material I need is the same material used to make reusable grocery bags, the reusable ones that most people give away with business names and such on them, not the type of plastic bags from the grocery stores,” she said. Anyone with any to spare would be greatly appreciated and she needs 1/4” elastic should anyone have any extra they could donate as well.

To date she has made approximately 25 masks and has spent a majority of her time just cutting fabric but hopes to get that number much higher as she plans to sew for the next several days and weeks ahead.

Stitch and Sew has donated a large amount of fabric to Kuhns and has discounted the price for elastic she has purchased so far. At some point she will need more fabric as well so people can donate that as well.

Items can be dropped at Pauly’s Barbecue located at 310 East Columbia Street in Arthur between the hours of 10:30 am – 7:30 pm Monday thru Saturday.
