Broncos roll past Sangamon Valley 48-0

Senior Broncos running back Cody Layfield (#31) scores from 32-yards out following the fumble recovery by Ty Carlson in the first quarter. Layfield had three touchdowns in the first half and quarterback Colin Warren added two scores and Garrett Daniels scored on a 16-yard play as CGB led 41-0 at halftime.

A fired up Broncos team traveled to Sangamon Valley on Friday evening to take on the Storm in an LPC matchup after having the prior week off due to a forfeit by Carlyle,.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Broncos scored their first touchdown of the night with 8:44 to go in the first quarter making it 7-0. Following a Storm fumble which was recovered by Ty Carlson at the Broncos 32-yard line, CGB’s Cody Layfield scored on the first play making it 14-0 with still 6:41 to go in the first quarter.

Sangamon Valley’s Travis Hemphill’s pass was intercepted by Spencer Sterling on the Broncos 20-yard line late in the first quarter as the Storm struggled to get anything going offensively. This time Collin Warren scored the touchdown on the keeper making it 20-0 as the extra point was missed with 1:16 left.

In the second quarter, Layfield and Garrett Daniels each scored touchdowns from 13-yards and 16-yards out respectively as the Broncos pushed their lead to 34-0. Broncos quarterback Collin Warren scored again late in the second quarter and took a 41-0 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, Layfield scored one more touchdown on the night as he had 16 carries for 186-yards and 4 touchdowns in the game.

This week the Broncos will host the ALAH Knights as Cerro Gordo celebrates Homecoming.

Coach Walker stated, “We have to be aggressive and disciplined on the defensive side of the ball on Friday against ALAH.  Must get a lot of hats to the ball.  Offensively we have to stay efficient.  It should be a good game as ALAH is a tough team with a lot of talent.  I am looking forward to the game Friday.

Cody Layfield 16 carries for 186 yards and 4 touchdowns; Colin Warren 8 carries for 51 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns; 4 for 7 passing 39 yards and 1 touchdown; Spencer Sterling rushed for 42-yards on 4 carries; Garrett Daniels had 2 catches for 25-yards and 1 touchdown.

Defensive Stats:

Collin Warren 9 tackles and 2 for loss; Ty Carlson had 10 tackles and 1 for loss, and two fumble recoveries; and Spencer Sterling had 7 tackles and 1 interception.
