CGB Battles in Homecoming Football Game

Trailing 0-13 in the second quarter, senior running back Cody Layfield (#31) turns up-field while teammate Thomas Pierceall (#65) watches him being pursued by several Knight defenders giving the Broncos a big first down.

The CGB Broncos played hosts to the Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond Knights last Friday night in the annual Homecoming football game. The Broncos were coming off a big win the previous week over Lincoln Prairie Conference foe Sangamon Valley and looking to maintain the momentum from that game. ALAH was looking to do the same after their victory over Tri-County.

The Broncos received the opening kickoff but were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt. An errant snap sailed over the punter’s head and the visitors were inside the 10 yard line for their first possession. ALAH would score but the Bronco’s defense blocked the extra point kick and the visitors led 6-0 with 8:52 left in the first quarter.

CGB’s next two series also ended with punts but they also forced the Knights to punt. After the second Bronco punt ALAH put together a drive that ended with a 25 yard td by Kaden Feagin. After the EP kick the Knights led 13-0 at the 11:53 mark of the second.

CGB then put together a drive themselves that started at their own 3 and ended with a 6 yard touchdown. Workhorse back Cody Layfield saw the majority of the carries on the drive starting with a 12 yard run on the first play and a 19 yard gain on a third down and ten play that put the ball at the Knights’ 6. Fullback Spencer Sterling took the ball into the end zone and put the Broncos on the board. The EP kick was no good but the Knights’ lead was down to one score at 13-6 with 7:59 left in the half.

Neither team was able to put together any sort of sustained drive and at halftime the score remained 13-6 in favor of the visitors.

ALAH got the ball first in the second half and after a kick return to their own 48, they scored on the third play of the half. After the EP kick the Knights led 20-6.

Unfortunately for the home team, ALAH successfully executed an onside kick that gave them the ball at CGB’s 38. Running back Feagin scored on the first play from scrimmage and the lead was now 26-6 with 10:18 left in the third.

The Broncos began to pass the ball a little more and QB Colin Warren had some nice completions to Garrett Daniels and Chance Young. On a fourth down and short the offense fumbled and the Knights recovered but they gave the ball right back to the home team on a fumble of their own. So the drive then continued with a 34 yard pass to Ian Bettinger. Layfield would gain 9 yards in the drive and Sterling 4 to move the ball to the 1 yard line. A face mask penalty on the Knights also helped during the drive. On second and goal from the 1, Layfield took the ball in for the score. The two point conversion run was stopped but the lead was trimmed to 26-12 with 5:12 to go in the third.

CGB’s attempted onside kick went out of bounds and set the Knights up at midfield. Running plays moved the ball to the 8 and Feagin would score from there. The kick was successful and ALAH led 33-12 at the 3:19 mark of the third.

After a nice return to their own 42 by Chance Young, Warren completed a long pass to Daniels. Layfield then took over again picking up yards and capping the series off with a 21 yard td run. The kick by Ty Carlson was good and the score was now 33-19 once again a two score game.

The Bronco’s defense came up big in ALAH’s next possession forcing a fumble at the Knights’ own 7 with 10:16 left in the game. The Broncos began their drive at the 13 and moved the ball up to their 47. But then the Knights’ defensive back Landon Waldrop picked off a Warren pass and returned it all the way for a touchdown. The kick was blocked again but the lead for the visitors’ was now 39-19 with 7:21 remaining in the game.

The home team on their next series again mixed running and passing plays to move the ball again to midfield but the drive stalled at their own 47 and they turned the ball over to ALAL at that spot.

The Knights scored their last touchdown on the next play on a 47 yard run by quarterback Jayce Parsons. The kick was good, making the final score 46-19.

The Cerro Gordo Bement Broncos travel to Argenta-Oreana next Friday, October 1 for a Lincoln Prairie Conference game. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
