Broncos fall to the Purple Riders

Following his 57-yard touchdown run Cody Layfield scores the 2-point conversion as Zach Butler (#74) for Arcola couldn’t make the stop. Layfield had 2 touchdowns and completed 1 pass for 33-yards for CGB but the Riders prevailed defeating the Broncos 36-26.

The Cerro Gordo Bement Broncos faced another Lincoln Prairie Conference football team in a back-and-forth contest ending with a loss of 26-36 to the Arcola Purple Riders at home on Friday as it was Military Appreciation night.

The Riders scored on the first play as Tanner Thomas ran it 62-yards making it 7-0 at the 11:40 mark in the first quarter.

CGB put their first points on the board late in the first quarter as Warren’s pass to Layfield put them on Arcola’s 31-yard line and two plays later Warren on the keeper scored from 17-yards out. The 2-point conversion was no good and with 2:13 left in the first quarter, the score was CGB 6-7 and that’s how the quarter ended.

On fourth and eighteen, CGB takes the lead for the first time in the game on an 18-yard pass from Warren to Layfield and the 2-point conversion was no good again making it 12-7 with 7:37 to go till half.

The Purple Rider’s Tanner Thomas scores on their next possession on a 71-yard run putting them back in the lead 13-12 at the 6:11 mark.

CGB scores again this time as Layfield runs it in from 2-yard out but the 2-point conversion once good is no good. With 1:50 left to half the Broncos lead 18-13 and that’s what the score would be at the break. Layfield in the first half had 20 carries for 59 yards and Warren had 10 carries for 54 and was 4-of-18 for 95 yards passing.

Second quarter action it was Arcola scoring on a 7-yard run by Caleb McMillan and Edwards runs it in for the 2-point conversion as the Purple Riders take the lead once again 21-18 at the 7:44 mark in the third quarter.

Once again Layfield gets the call and scores on a 44-yard run and this time the 2-point conversion is good as the Broncos trailed by two 26-28 and that’s how the third quarter ended.

The fourth quarter found the Riders scoring two more times and proved to be just too much for the Broncos as the final score was CGB 26-36 Arcola. The Riders won the Lincoln Prairie Conference title with the victory over the Broncos.

The CGB Broncos will be on the road Friday night as they travel to Cumberland to take on the Pirates.
