The Cerro Gordo Bement girls basketball team will look a little different this year as Andrew Buhr takes the head coaching job after being an assistant for the last five years at Cerro Gordo.

Coach Buhr said that he and his team are excited to have a somewhat normal season. The normalcy Coach Buhr believes will help the team get into a rhythm of play.

“I think those routines and procedures just help them out,” Coach Buhr said. “And we’re excited to get going that it’s like time for basketball season to start, and it’s happening right now.”

The team worked on continuity, communication, chemistry and putting in new plays in the first practices of the season.

The Broncos bring back nine returning sophomores and juniors. A player that is expected to have a huge impact is Lexus Lawnhorn who is expected to be a leader of this team and bring a steadying presence and leads by example. Also the Broncos will have a student coach in senior Trinity Stroich who will also provide leadership.

Lawnhorn as a leader wants to pick people up and wants to set the tone in practice. Her individual goal is to get confident with shooting. She believes she can be a good shooter and scorer for her team if she finds that confidence.

Stroich wants to bring that positive energy and pick up players when they’re not feeling so positive. Stroich wants her lasting mark to be a good reputation that people think of her well.

Lawhorn is part of a five player junior class that also consists of Jazzie Hicks, Morgan Brunner, Reese Brunner and Haley Garrett. Between the five of them Coach Buhr says he’s got some speed, shooting and easy baskets between the five of them.

Coach Buhr said that the goal for his team this year is to be above .500 overall record wise and competing for conference.

Coach Buhr’s overall message he wanted to send to readers and the community is that the team will be fun to watch and they’re building.

“With that (building) coming we’re gonna take our lumps a little bit,” Coach Buhr said. “Development is nonlinear a lot of times, but we’ve got some good young talent and I think we’ve got kids that like playing together. And we’re trying to play a fast style of basketball that I think is gonna be fun for our community to watch and to get on board.”

The Cerro Gordo Bement girls basketball team opened its season yesterday against Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg.
