CGB Broncos win 2, lose 3 on the week
Broncos clinch lead in sixth inning to defeat Decatur Eisenhower
On the road Saturday the Broncos stole the lead late in the game in a 13-9 victory over Decatur Eisenhower Panthers. The game was tied at nine with CGB batting in the top of the sixth when Ty Carlson grounded out, scoring one run.
The Broncos were boosted by Michael Freese who went 4-for-5 at the plate. Freese singled in the second, singled in the third, singled in the fourth, and singled in the sixth.
In the top of the fifth inning, Cerro Gordo-Bement tied things up at nine on an error scoring one run.
CGB scored five runs in the fourth inning as Tyson Moore, Xander Hutchcraft, Drew Cripe, Freese, and Austin Cottrell each had RBIs in the big inning.
Ryan Dick was the winning pitcher for the Broncos. He went five innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking one. Brody Somers threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen. Dick recorded the last 15 outs to earn the save.
CGB saw the ball well, racking up ten hits in the game. Freese, Hutchcraft, and Moore all collected multiple hits. Freese went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead the team in hits. They also tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Freese led the way with four.
In walk-off, CGB loses to Argenta-Oreana
It came down to the last play as CGB was on the wrong end of a 5-4 defeat to Argenta-Oreana on Friday. The game was tied at four with the Bombers batting in the bottom of the eighth when Hall singled on a 2-1 count, scoring the winning run.
The Broncos evened things up at four in the top of the sixth inning scoring one run when Aiden Shonkwiler doubled.
Ryan Dick took the loss for the Broncos allowing two hits and one run. Tyson Moore started the game for CGB going seven innings, allowing four runs on six hits, and striking out four.
Moore led the Broncos with three hits in five at bats.
Broncos pitchers Cripe and Somers combine to shutout Arthur Christian School
CGB was at home on Thursday as they hosted the Arthur Christian School on a very windy, cool spring afternoon.
The Broncos defeated the Conquering Riders 14-0 as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Brody Somers induced a groundout from Joe Theriault to finish off the game.
Cerro Gordo-Bement got things moving in the first inning, when Aiden Shonkwiler singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.
They put up seven runs in the third inning as big bats were led by doubles by Tyson Moore and Somers, a walk by Drew Cripe, a single by Austin Cottrell, a fielder’s choice by Michael Freese, and an error on a ball put in play by Shonkwiler.
One bright spot for Arthur Christian Varsity Conquering Riders was a single by Brock Helmuth in the first inning.
Cripe pitched the Broncos to victory lasting three innings, allowing five hits and zero runs while striking out five and walking zero. Somers threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Tyson Moore launched one home run on the day in the second inning.
On the day the Broncos tallied 13 hits with Moore and Ty Carlson managing three hits each to lead the team. Moore also led with two stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with six stolen bases. CGB didn’t commit a single error in the field as Xander Hutchcraft had the most chances in the field with five.
Mt. Pulaski Hilltoppers captures lead early to defeat the Broncos
CGB watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 17-0 loss to Mt. Pulaski Hilltoppers on Tuesday at home. The Hilltoppers scored on a home run by Landon Smith, a double by Clay Aylesworth, and a fielder’s choice by Kolin Gibbs in the first inning.
CGB struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Mt. Pulaski giving up 17 runs.

Aiden Shonkwiler took the loss for Cerro Gordo-Bement as the righty allowed nine hits and 14 runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two.
Michael Freese, Xander Hutchcraft, and Moore each managed one hit to lead the team.
CGB outdone by Heritage Hawks 5-8
At home on Monday hosting Heritage, the Hawks scored in the first inning when Kolton Junglas singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run.
In the bottom of the third inning, CGB tied things up at one. An error scored one run for the Broncos.
After the Hawks scored one run in the top of the fifth, the Broncos answered with one of their own. Heritage scored when an error scored one run. CGB then answered when Austin Cottrell singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.
Heritage pulled away for good with four runs in the fourth inning.
Dick took the loss for Cerro Gordo-Bement as the righthander surrendered six runs on eight hits over four and a third innings, striking out five.
Michael Freese went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Broncos in hits.
