Broncos falls in back-and-forth affair against Arcola Purple Riders

Even though the Cerro Gordo-Bement Broncos and Arcola Purple Riders both had their opportunities, it was Arcola that eventually prevailed 11-10 on Monday, April 18 at home. The game was tied at ten with the Purple Riders batting in the top of the seventh when an error scored one run.

CGB collected six hits and Arcola had 15 in the high-scoring affair.

In the top of the sixth inning, Arcola tied things up at ten when Braden Phillips doubled on a 3-1 count, scoring two runs.

After the Purple Riders scored two runs in the top of the fifth, the Broncos answered with two of their own. Arcola scored again when Tanner Thomas homered on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs. CGB then answered when Xander Hutchcraft grounded out, scoring one run and Michael Freese singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

The Broncos tallied five runs in the fourth inning. The rally was led by a walk by Drew Cripe, a single by Aiden Shonkwiler, a groundout by Garrett Daniels, and an error on a ball put in play by Hutchcraft.

Arcola scored four runs in the fourth inning with big bats were led by DJ Stevens, Thomas, Beau Edwards, and Anthony Garza, all knocking in runs in the inning.

Brody Somers took the loss for Cerro Gordo-Bement He surrendered five runs on five hits over three innings, striking out two and walking one. Cripe started the game for for the Broncos as the righthander went four innings, allowing six runs on ten hits, striking out six and walking one.

CGB racked up six hits in the game. Freese and Shonkwiler each had two hits to lead the team.

The game varsity and jv games scheduled for Saturday, April 23 at home against the Sullivan Redskins was cancelled due to a lack of umpires.
