The ALAH cross country teams ran at the 50th Annual Spartan Classic held on the streets of St. Joe on Saturday, September 24. The ALAH Knights Cross Country Teams bussed to St. Joseph, IL early on Saturday, September 24 to run the prestigious Spartan Classic.
This race is run on the streets of St. Joe and the course is noted to be flat and fast. The reputation of the course proved accurate as the Knight’s boys and girls ran to multiple personal records (PR’s).
At 9:00am , the boys led off to the report of Starter Bob Rice’s pistol. A crowd of 169 runners jockeyed for position on Main Street.
Again moving to the lead pack was the Knight’s Logan Beckmier. His senior mates, Lyle and Jacob Adcock were close behind and remained that way for the 1st mile. During the 2nd mile, Beckmier broke away along with runners from El Paso-Gridley, Effingham St. Anthony and Tuscola. The neighboring Warrior duo pulled away for the top two places while running under 15 minutes, while Beckmier was outsprinted to the finish by the EPG and St. Anthony runners to finish 5th but with an excellent PR of 15:15.
Adcock’s, while coming back from enduring illness, finish 13th and 18th with Lyle ahead in 16:10 & Jacob crossing the finish in 16:18. Caden Binder finishes 67th with a huge PR of 17:43. Connor Edmonds makes his season debut in 19:41 (126th) while Ryker Beckmier drops a 50 second PR of 22:01 to finish 153rd out of the 169 runners.
The Knights have their best team finish of the year placing 7th out of the 30 squads competing. The field was loaded as usual with at least 6 state ranked schools in the mix.
The ALAH girls dropped multiple PR’s on the lightning fast 3 mile course.
Freshman Ruby Burton again led the fillies while placing 47th with a big PR of 21:35. Emma Edwards was again medal worthy with her best time in 2 years running 22:49. She was followed by teammates all dropping big PR’s. Kimberly Krutsinger runs to 113th in 25:03, almost a 2 minute best. Lindsay Rohacs goes 116th in a PR of 25:14 followed closely by Evanger Wiley in 119th in a 2 ½ minute PR of 25:50. Grace Romine finished the scoring with a nearly 3 minute PR of 29:28 to finish 134th. The girls race featured a total of 140 runners representing 4 of the state’s top 10 teams including #1 ranked, defending state Champs Tolono Unity.
Of note was Unity’s Erica Woodard running the fastest 3 mile in the storied history of their program dropping an incredible 17:12 followed closely by Monticello’s All-Stater, Mabry Bruhn in 17:14.
Next Saturday, October 1, the Knight’s Harriers go to the other side of Moultrie County to run the Lincoln Prairie Conference Championships in Bethany’s Crowder Park. The boys will be running for their 4th consecutive championship while the girls are looking for their first championship in the program’s history. Girls Run At 9am while the boys start shortly after at 9:45am.
