CGB Cross Country Boys Take Third at Cumberland Invitational

The Cerro Gordo Bement Broncos cross country team ran in the annual Cumberland Invitational on Saturday, October 8. The race is run on the campus of Lake Land College in Mattoon. The boys’ team finished in third place in the team standings with 89 points behind second place Effingham St. Anthony, 83 and meet winner Tolono Unity who scored 68. The two other trophy winners were fourth place Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond with 91 and fifth place Marshall with 110. Other boys’ teams scoring were Cumberland, 143; Dieterich, 168; Sullivan, 197; Villa Grove, 225 and Mattoon, 289. Twenty-one schools had competitors in the meet.

Junior Dylan Howell was once again the top finisher for the Broncos taking second place with a time of 16:19.9. Will Fuson was fourth overall in 16:40.8. The other scorers for the boys and their times were John Paul Brewer, 25, 18:48.7; Evan Fogerson, 30, 19:14.7; and Tyce Alumbaugh, 37, 19:38.4.

Other boys running for CGB were Brody Somers, 42, 19:57.8; Cole Stoeger, 68, 21:20.2; John Freese, 21:50.3; Brendan Puckett, 78, 22:11.4; Brayden Strack, 79, 22:11.5; and Ian Hawk, 86, 23:03.0. The top 75 runners received medals.

Gabby Block was the lone CGB Lady Bronco to run in the meet. She finished in 22nd with a time of 23:51.4.

CGB next runs at home Tuesday, October 11, at Heritage High School on Thursday, October 13 before entering post season competition at the IHSA Regional which will be hosted by Shelbyville High School and held at the Forest Park-Dacey Trail on Saturday, October 22. The girls’ race will start at 10:00 a.m. with the boys to follow at 10:50 a.m.
