MTZ girls tennis finishes second in Apollo championship

The Mt. Zion girls tennis team finished second in the 2022 Apollo Conference Championship on October 1 in Mattoon. The Braves sent five players to the third-place and first-place matches. Audrey Bradford and Peyton Schroeder won championships at the No. 2 Singles slot and No.6 slot respectively.

Audrey Bradford in her championship match was focused in. The senior veteran battled through her bracket and her championship match zoned into her task. Audrey Bradford won both sets 6-1 and didn’t show a smile till she finished up with a championship.

Schroeder in her championship match overcame an obstacle. Schroeder won her first set 6-1 and then lost her second set 6-3. In the final set for the championship, Schroeder overrode the obstacle and won the set 6-2.

Gadi Velasco won seconds at No.3 singles slot. Allison Bradford and Kayla Schnippel won third place at No.1 and No.4 singles slot. The Braves finished with 17 points overall placing them in second place. Audrey Bradford and Schnippel made the All-Apollo Conference team.

“I am really proud of the girls and what they have accomplished this season,” Head coach Mike Roberts said.

This week the Braves will compete in the IHSA sectionals at St. Anthony on Friday and Saturday.
