A-H Elementary School Hosts Piatt County Spelling Bee

Twenty-five elementary/Jr. high students competed in the Piatt County Spelling Bee on Thursday, February 16, hosted by the A-H Elementary School with Chris Forman, Principal. Piatt County schools represented included: Atwood-Hammond Elementary, Bement Grade & Bement Middle, Cerro Gordo Elementary and Cerro Gordo Junior High, DeLand-Weldon, Monticello Middle School and Washington School, Monticello.

Chrissy Patterson, Title I Reading Teacher, was Moderator of the spelling bee which included students from 4th-8th grades. Renee’ Brown, District Librarian, served as Pronouncer.

Spelling his way to first place was Grant Niemerg of Monticello Middle School, 6th grader. His winning word was vengeance. Second place winner was Hallie McCabe, a fifth grader at Washington School. She lost with the word follicle.

Every student did a fantastic job and lost by missing one letter or transposing a letter. Everyone should be proud of each one. Participants in the spelling bee were as follows:

A-H Elementary School: 4th-Carter Fleming, 5th-Lyndon Cowgill, 6th-Ava Jacot, 7th-Bella Romine and 8th-Layla Skeeters.

Bement Grade School: 4th-Audrey Larson, 5th-Wyatt Swinger.

Bement Middle School: 6th-Emerson Larson, 7th-Emmalyn Ewers, 8th-Andrew Bregin.

Cerro Gordo Elementary School: 4th-Noah Blomgren, 5th-Tristan Garver, 6th-Madeline Willard.

Cerro Gordo Junior High: 7th-Autumn Gant, 8th-Miley Dye.

DeLand-Weldon Schools: 4th-Brynlee Brockman, 5th-Alivia Sarinana, 6th-Shayla Wheeler, 7th-Bellah Taylor, 8th-Emma Dunn.

Washington School, Monticello: 4th-Macie Frick, 5th-Hallie McCabe.

Monticello Middle School: 6th-Grant Niemerg, 7th-Walter Saiger, 8th-Sophie Wills.
