Bement School Board Discusses 2023-2024 Sports Co-op Agreement, Approves Bus Contract

Cerro Gordo to vote on High School Sports Agreement Mid-March

The Bement School Board met on March 8, 2023. Topics of discussions included the 2023-2024 Co-op Sports Agreement with Cerro Gordo.

The middle school co-op was explained by the superintendent and was an agenda item. “Not many changes are happening in winter sports for the upcoming season as far as the agreement goes” stated Superintendent Mary Vogt. Regarding middle school sports, it was decided that due to the IESA roster number mandates, 6th graders will be allowed to play only if the number of 7th and 8th graders does not equal or exceed the roster mandates set by the IESA. If there are not enough 7th and 8th graders to fill the roster, then 6th graders will be allowed to sign up. This is not going to be written in the agreement as the numbers will change each year. Also, practice locations will be flexible and not written in the agreement. Those decisions will be made by the Bement and Cerro Gordo athletic directors.

Due to high participation numbers for next year, especially in Middle School Volleyball, B games will be played as much as possible. The schedule is already set for next year and Christy Sweet, Bement’s Athletic Director, will look at the schools currently on the schedule. Those who do not have the number of players for two games will be dropped from the schedule and replaced with schools that do. This will afford all of the Bement/Cerro Gordo players with the opportunity to play. Board members approved the agreement as presented.

Cerro Gordo will act on the High School Sports Co-op Agreement at their upcoming regular March board meeting. The Bement School Board will then vote to approve the high school agreement at the April meeting.
Superintendent Vogt shared information on the bid from Birch Bus Service for the 2023-2024 school year. The contract includes regular bus routes, extracurricular trips and fuel paid in excess. The contract proposed an increase of 4 ½ percent from the previous year.

The contract was approved by the board.
