The Mt. Zion girls soccer team won two matches last week defeating Warrensburg-Latham/Maroa Forsyth and Taylorville and lost a narrow 1-0 loss against Mahomet-Seymour.

Against Warrensburg-Latham/Maroa Forsyth , the Braves were held scoreless in the first 22 minutes of the match. Cardinals’ goalkeeper Macey Young made eight of her 19 saves in the opening 22 minutes.

The Braves offense finally broke open the scoreboard in the 22nd minute of the match. Reese Donahue found a cutting McKenzie Krieger through the defense. Krieger shot and netted the goal into the low-left corner of the goal to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.

Less than three minutes later, the Braves scored again. Boston Flanigan kept the ball in play and found Sydney Howerton. Howerton passed to Krieger who cut it right back to Howerton and Howerton shot and scored the second Braves’ goal of the match to give the Braves a 2-0 lead.

Flanigan scored the third and final goal of the match for the Braves. Maddie Kendall found Flanigan open right outside the 20-yard line and Flanigan fired a shot into the back of the net to give the Braves a 3-0 lead and win.

The Braves improve to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in Apollo conference play. This week the Braves will face Charleston and Lincoln.

“We are proud of the effort,” Head coach Jonathan Moore said. “First of all, I think they play hard and as pressure settles things will come and we’ll get better, but the effort’s always gotta be there. And this week, all three games, we are happy with the effort. Now its competing next week, win 50/50 balls and communicate as a team against other teams.”
