The Mt. Zion softball team won two Apollo conference doubleheaders and one non-conference game against Monticello last week, while outscoring their opponents 61-8.
Against Monticello, Kayla Schnippel got the start on the mound and in the top of the first inning gave up a lead off double, but three three straight strikeouts. In the bottom of the first inning, Schnippel got the first hit for the Braves when she hit a single to the right-field gap.
Audri Johnson reached on an E9 and Bailey Maulden scored a pinch run for Schnippel. With two outs and runners on second and third, Addison Rotz hit a 2 RBI-double to give the Braves a 4-0 lead.
The Braves defense executed in the second inning while committing an E6, but prevented a run scored. Karlie Teel came to the plate in the second inning and delivered a two-run shot over the left-centerfield wall as part of a six run inning. Teel got another homer in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run bomb over the left field wall.
“We played very well,” Head coach Greg Blakey said. “We came out and hit the ball very well immediately and I was beyond pleased with the offense today.”
The Braves finished with a 15-1 win. The Braves impeded to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in Apollo Conference play. The Braves will face Normal Community and Rochester this week.
