The Mt. Zion baseball team picked up a win against Teutopolis, but lost three games last week with a loss to Bloomington and two to Mattoon.

Against Mattoon, in the first game, the Braves trailed early after the bottom of the first inning when Owen Hawkins hit a grand slam homer off Robert Chausse.

Chausse got his chance to get back at the Green Wave in the top of the second. Chausse hit a ball to the left-field gap for a single. Brendan Doyle got on a walk in the same inning but stranded a runner.

Chausse tossed a shutout inning in the third and fourth along with defensive help from Evam Hamrick who made a leaping catch from third base in the fourth and a caught stolen tag in the third. Hamrick was able to get a leadoff double to the right centerfield gap in the top of the third and Aiden Weaver was walked but both would not score.

The Braves ended up losing the first game 10-0 after Joseph Stewart hit a grand slam homer and then laot the second game of the doubleheader 2-0 with Sam Driscoll getting six strikeouts and Doyle getting the only hit for the Braves.

“We didn’t hit and we didn’t have an approach to the plate,” Head coach JD Arnold said. “ We didn’t swing the bats and we gotta score runs moving forward to bounce back.”

The Braves overall record is now 10-7 and 4-2 in Apollo Conference play. The Braves face Pleasant Plains and Lincoln this week.
