On Tuesday, May 2, in a courtroom packed with family and friends, career prosecutor Kate Watson was sworn in as circuit judge for Douglas County and the 6th Judicial Circuit.

She has worked in this Douglas County courtroom for 27 years and is the first woman judge in the county. Supreme Court Justice David Overstreet presided over the swearing in ceremony following initial remarks by Randy Rosenbaum, Chief Judge for the 6th Judicial Circuit and Kate’s husband, John.

She replaces Richard Broch who recently retired and has served as Douglas County State’s Attorney since 2016. Watson intends to run as a Republican next year for the post to which she’s been appointed.

The Douglas County Board has named Robert Kosic of Arcola to replace Watson as state’s attorney. He plans to run as a Republican for the state’s attorney position in the fall of 2024.
