MTZ girls track sends 14 qualifiers to state

The Mt. Zion girls track and field team competed in sectionals last week and are sending 14 qualifiers in nine events to the IHSA State Championship in Charleston this week.

Sofia Munoz and Camille Mavis both qualified in the 800 meters finishing third and fifth in sectionals with personal record times of two minutes and 18 seconds and two minutes and 21 seconds. Munoz is ranked fifth in the event going into the prelim and Davis is 12th.

Munoz also finished in fifth place in the 1600 meters at sectionals with a five minute and 14 second time that gave her a ninth place ranking going into the prelims.

Renee Ballard and Ellie Fritzche qualified in the 3200 meters for the Braves finishing third and fourth place with times of 11 minutes and 43 seconds and 11 minutes and 44 seconds. Balled is currently ranked 15th and Fritzche is 19th.

Lydia Trump finished in third place in the 100-meter- hurdles with a time of 15.96 seconds for a personal record and qualified for an 11th place ranking going into state prelims.

Trump also finished first in the 300-meter-hurdles with a personal record time of 46.62 seconds and Jinna Hiser finished third with a personal record time of 48.14 seconds. Trump is ranked 8th going into prelims and Hiser is at 18th.

On the relay side, the Braves qualified their 4×200 team of Trump, Brooklyn Kondritz, Angelina Henderson and Hillary Owens with a time of one minute and 46 seconds for third place at sectionals and 16th in rankings. The same team also qualified for the 4×400 with a time of four minutes and six seconds that was second place at sectionals and ninth in rankings.

The 4×800 team of Avery Sommer, Hannah Gebke, Mavis and Brooklyn Doyle finished in second place in sectionals with a time of nine minutes and 54 seconds and are ranked sixth in the prelims.

Kondritz and Alexa Weter finished first and second in Pole Vaults with a jump of 3.72 meters and 3.42 meters. Kondritz is ranked third and Weter is eighth ahead of prelims.

The IHSA State Championship prelims will be on Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the finals will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
