Danny Powell to Present Message at Atwood Memorial Day Service Monday, May 29

Memorial Day 2023 will be remembered in Atwood on Monday, May 29, at 10:30 a.m., Mackville Cemetery, west of Atwood. The event is sponsored by Atwood American Legion James Reeder Post #770.

Danny Powell of rural Arthur, will give the message. Danny is a 1965 graduate of Atwood-Hammond High School. He married a hometown girl & classmate, Gaye Jurgens. Danny was a teacher for 6 years and Principal for 27 years, all at Villa Grove.

He retired in 2002 and then did substitute teaching for 13 years at Arthur, Atwood and Tuscola. Powell reads devotions at the Arthur Home Monday-Friday and is on the board at the Arthur Home, Eberhardt Village and Arthur Unit 305 School Foundation. He is active in the Arthur United Methodist Church. Danny & Gaye love horses, dogs & cats.

Posting of the colors by the James Reeder Post 770 color guard will open the ceremony. Bill & Mitch Fleming and Joe Wolfe will present patriotic music. Opening prayer will be given by Pastor Micheal Drake, United Church of Atwood.

Post Commander Ken Caraway and Donald Swartz will read the rosters from Lake Fork, Mackville & Zion Cemeteries.

Post #770 firing squad will present the salute, followed by David Fleming with taps. Pastor Woody White of the First Baptist Church of Atwood will give the benediction.

Take time out of your busy day by remembering our veterans. Lawn chairs are suggested.
