MTZ boys track and field repeat as sectional champs

The Mt. Zion boys track and field team finished as the 2023 IHSA 2A Track and Field Sectional Champions in Mattoon. This is the second straight and second overall sectional championship.

The Braves qualified in 10 events for the state prelims in Charleston. The 4×800 team of Julian Baker, Kam Clark, Owen Owens and Sam Atkinson qualified with a time of three minutes and 28 seconds.

Baker as an individual placed second overall in the 1600 meters running a qualifying time of four minutes and 24 seconds. Baker along with Braves’ teammate Dan Grauer finished first and sixth in the 3200 meters to qualify for the state prelims.

Atkinson qualified as an individual in the 800 meters finishing with a time of two minutes that was the best in the sectional. Clark made it to the prelims in the high jump along with Braves’ teammate Brayden Trimble with both finishing second in the sectional with a jump of 1.85 meters.

Trimble along with Jacob Harvey, Bryson Richardson, Kyle Hensley won the sectional 4×200 relay and qualified for the prelims with a time of one minute and 29 seconds. Trimble, Hensley, Richardson and Bryndon Wallace qualified as the Braves 4×100 team with a time of 43.38 seconds.

Richardson qualified as an individual in the 200 meters with a time of 22.21 seconds. Hensley finished first in the sectional in Pole Vaults with a jump of five meters. Wallace qualified as an individual in the long jump with a jump of 6.54 meters.

The Braves will compete in the IHSA 2A Track and Field Championship prelims on Friday from 8 a.m.. To 12 p.m. at O’Brien Field. If they qualify from prelims, the final will be on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
