MTZ girls soccer ends season in regional championship

Staff Writer

The Mt. Zion girls soccer finished regional play and their season with a 8-0 win against Meridian and then a 9-0 loss to Rochester in the IHSA Regional Championship match in Rochester.

The Braves finished their season 14-8 overall and 5-5 in the Apollo Conference tied for third in the Apollo Conference with Lincoln.

“We felt like we had a solid season,” Head coach Jonathan Moore said. “Mixing in some new players with a good returning group and our chemistry continued to grow throughout the year. We were always pleased with their effort and this was a fun group to be around.”

The Braves graduate five seniors in Ally Root, Isabelle Holmes, Boston Flanigan, Chloe Davis and Linsey Scherer.

“We’ll definitely miss our five seniors,” Coach Moore said. “They each provided their own unique form of leadership on and off the field. I think what we’ll miss most about them is their joy for the game and energy they brought each day. “

The Braves will return a core of offensive players with leading goal scorers McKenzie Krieger and Maddie Kendall. Two-way midfield players Sydney Howerton and Reese Donahue will also return along with goalkeeper Chloe Kunci and defenders Tayetum Flanigan, Maddy Kuitwrs and Gracie Larrison.

“We’re excited to see what our returning core will be able to do in the future,” Coach Moore said. “Hopefully, this offseason they’ll continue to improve their fundamentals and get out and play as much as possible.”
