The Atwood Apple Dumpling/Sesquicentennial Celebration is right around the corner, Friday and Saturday, August 18 & 19. The Atwood Chamber of Commerce and the Sesquicentennial Committee have been working diligently to have the best festival ever.

There are some great additions to the festival this year, such as the Apple Dumpling Dog Show, Sesquicentennial Village, Sesquicentennial Car Show and our main Saturday night entertainment is The Henningsens.

The Sesquicentennial Village will be on West Central from Main to the alley. There will be games for the children, maybe even adults. Many Sesquicentennial items will be on display. You won’t want to miss catching up on what happened back in 1973.

Get your pet groomed and ready to compete in the Dog Show, sponsored by Top Knot Pet Grooming. This will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19. Registration will be from 3:30-4:30 p.m. with the show beginning at 5 p.m. in front of the Main Stage. Categories will include: “Waggiest Tail”, Best Trick, Owner/Pet Look Alike and Crowd Favorite. Registration fee will be a hand or bath towel.

The Apple Dumpling Newspaper will be coming out in the near future. Be sure and read it from cover to cover to be informed of all the festivities happening in town.

Vendor Coordinator Jami Bowles says to date she has over 35 various vendors and 10 food vendors. There is still time for more additions, if Jami can find the room. What a nice problem to have. She has been getting calls frequently.

The car show will be Saturday, August 19, from 3-7 p.m. and is hosted by the First Baptist Church of Atwood and anyone with a car, truck or motorcycle is invited. Registration will be by donation and will be divided between the A-H Christmas Needy Fund and the Atwood Area Food Pantry. Five trophies will be rewarded for the top 5, 3 for antique class original 1934 or older, 1 for pastor’s choice, and 1 for the best of show. There will be goodie bags, free Apple Dumpling coupon for the first 50 entries, trophies, participant judging, dash plaques, first 50 entries only.

The Apple Dumpling/Sesquicentennial Parade is guaranteed to be great with entries from all over the area. If you aren’t already signed up, call Alora Murphy today at 217-840-2961. If you have a golf cart, decorate it, and enter the parade. Just contact Lorie so she is aware. All entries are welcome.

The Sesquicentennial Committee invites residents, if they desire, to bring a small item to be placed in the new time capsule to be buried at a later date. Please make the items fairly small in order to get more in the capsule. Bring the items to the former Municipal Building during the festival.

This is just a small start to what will be a wonderful weekend with the Apple Dumpling Festival a Sesquicentennial. Watch for the special edition on all the festivities coming up August 18 & 19.
