Bement Looks Ahead to New School Year

The Bement school board held its regular meeting on August 8.

Enrollment figures continue to change before the start of school in all grade levels but remain comparable to last year. As of this meeting, there were 135 students registered in elementary school (PreK-5), 69 in middle school (6-8), and 91 in high school (9-12) for a total of 295.

A tentative budget for July 1, 2023-June 30, 2024 was presented to the board by Superintendent Vogt. A vote will be held at the September board meeting.

A dedication of the new sound system for the baseball diamond, funded by a memorial from the family of Jack Hicks, the Bement Lion’s Club, and the Bement High School Alumni Dinner Association, was held on August 15.

Superintendent Vogt reported that the Technology Agreement with Monticello Schools is proving to be a success. As part of the Technology Agreement, if problems arise that are not able to be resolved in-house, Monticello’s technology department will step in to assist.

Bids for the chimney repair project will begin August 17. Once the board approves the bid, the work will begin in September.

Dual Credit courses through Parkland College, available for qualifying high school students, for the 2023-2024 school year include: English 101 & 102, Psychology 101, Sociology 101, Computer Applications, and ECCA (a Construction Program).

After returning from closed session, the board approved the following items:

•Jani Hamilton as school treasurer.

•The State Bank of Bement as school depositor.

•The resignation of Michelle Soice as school nurse.

•The hiring of Amy Wolfe as yearbook sponsor for the 2023-2024 school year.

•The hiring of Amy Wolfe as the art club sponsor for the 2023-2024 school year.

•The hiring of Brayden Snyder as the middle school boys’ basketball assistant coach for the 2023-2024 school year.

•The hiring of John White as the long-term substitute to teach K-6 special education.

•The hiring of Cristina Wright as the long-term substitute to teach middle school ELA.

•The hiring of Bronwyn Cain as a special education teacher assistant starting with the 2023-2024 school year.

•Approved to move the September Board Of Education meeting from September 13 to Wednesday, September 20 at 6:30PM.
