The Mt. Zion Volleyball team picked up four wins and suffered three defeats last week, earning a third place finish in the Olney Tiger Classic. Denver Anderson and Maddie Moore made the all-tournament team.
Against Unity Christian, the Braves faced a deficit midway through the first set after down 15-10. The Braves battled back and tied it 16-16 when Jocelyn Turner got a kill. Madi Moore and Denver Anderson recorded kills to narrow the Lions lead to 20-19.
The Braves then talked off six straight points that ended with a Denver Anderson kill that gave the Braves a 25-20 first set win.
Midway through the second set, the Braves were down 14-11. The Braves rattled off six straight points including a Moore ace and a Tayetum Flanigan kill.
The Lions rallied back and took a 22-21 lead late. The Braves closed out the Lions with four straight points that included a Flanigan kill to get a 25-22 second set win.
“I’m proud of them,” Head coach Traci Dyer-Townsend said. “They are doing their jobs and things that we’re working on, they’re able to make mistakes but still be gritty and be resilient and still like to come after it hard. They’re good competitive athletes in that way and they just don’t crumble. They rise up instead of letting the errors kind of get in their head. I feel like the sky’s the limit. We still have a lot to work on, but they’re getting it and they’re taking their role and they’re killing it.”
The Braves improved to 5-3 overall. This week the Braves will face Charleston and Mahomet-Seymour.
