The Mt. Zion boys soccer team went 3-1 last week picking up wins against Taylorville, Effingham and Decatur Eisenhower/MacArthur and recording one loss to Champaign Central.
Against Effingham, the Braves scored three minutes into the game when Bryndon Wallace shot and scored his first goal of his senior season to give the Brave a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, the Braves struck again when Hayden Shumaker dished a corner-kick assist to Carter Bahls who headed the ball into the back of the net to score to give the Braves a 2-0 lead.
Later in the half, Thomas Kanemaru dished off a cross-pass to Shumaker who punished the Effingham keeper for cheating up and scored to give the Braves a 3-0 lead.
Greg Frazier added a goal, Shumaker scored four more and Jay Oliveria got his first goal of the season that propelled the Braves to an 8-1 win.
“I thought we played well,” Head coach Scott Crawford said. “I thought there were times that we played really well and the other times that we just held on. I think we’re still building. I think fitness is part of it. I think the fact that we play three games in a week is part of it, but I think we’re building and I think we’re getting better every time we step on the field.”
The Braves improved to 5-2-1 and 2-0-1 overall. This week the Braves will face Williamsville, Mahomet-Seymour and Mattoon.
“I think we’ve got some tough games ahead,” Coach Crawford said” We have a tough game Saturday of course and then the next two are gonna be tough games . So, we’re excited. I’d like to go 3-0 three but we’ll see if they grow. I want to get the conference game obviously, so Mahomet’s a big deal.”
