The Mt. Zion Volleyball went 1-1 last week, losing an Apollo Conference match on the road against Mahomet-Seymour and winning one at home against Charleston.

In the first set, the Braves were down 4-0 to start. Ella Fink got the offense going, nailing the kill to cut the Trojans’ lead to 4-2. Maddie Doolen and Jocelyn Turner each added kills to make the score 5-3.

After trading points, Denver Anderson and Maddie Kendall went up for a block to tie the set at 8-8. The Braves went on to add three more points off an Anderson kill, a Kemal kill and an out of bounds return from the Trojans as the Braves took an 11-8 lead.

The Braves went down 13-12 but tied the set 13-13 when Kendall got a kill. The Braves scored three more straight points that ended on a Tayetum Flanigan kill to give the Braves a 16-13 lead.

The Braves went on to outscore the Trojans 9-2 that ended with an Anderson kill that sealed the first set 25-15. The Braves went on to win the second set 25-23.

“I think we are really gritty and we don’t get rattled easily,” Head coach Traci Dyer-Townsend said. “And so even though I thought some of my players, a couple of ‘em got rattled, but , that’s just like the nature of this team we’re like in it together. I feel like we pull each other in and that helps motivate us, to where we’re not spiraling into errors.”

The Braves improved to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in Apollo Conference play. This week the Braves will face Mattoon and Monticello.
