The Mt. Zion Volleyball team went 2-0 last week winning against Monticello and Apollo Conference foe Mattoon.
Against Mattoon, the Braves won the first set 25-22. In the second set, the Braves started off with a 3-2 lead that included a Jocelyn Turner kill.
The Braves and Green Wave battled and the Braves trailed 14-12. Madi Moore then tied the game with an ace and took the lead with an ace to make it 15-14. An out of bounds return and another Moore ace gave the Braves a 17-14 lead.
Maddie Doolin then added an ace and Turner made another kill that gave the Braves a 20-17 lead. The Braves went on to outscore the Green Wave 5-3 that ended in a Maddie Kill set-winning kill that gave the Braves a 25-20 set lead.
“I think we lacked a little bit of focus in the beginning, but as my team has proven before, we are not easily rattled,” Head coach Traci Dyer-Townsend said. “It was good to see them come back, play for play and get the win out by the skin of their teeth.”
The Braves improved to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in Apollo Conference play. This week the Braves will face Lincoln and Taylorville.
“Honestly, the key is that everyone is going to be healthy, the sickness is hitting our team,” Coach Dyer-Townsend said. “I just want us to rest for the weekend because next week’s gonna be the, it’s pretty challenging test.”
