The Mt. Zion volleyball team went 2-1 last week in its last week of the regular season.

Against St. Teresa, the Braves went down 1-0 after losing the first set 25-22. In the second set, the Braves went on a 9-0 run to start with a Tayetum Flanigan kill and multiple failed returns from the Bulldogs.

The Braves allowed one lint and then went on a 6-0 run that included a kill from Denver Anderson, an ace from Flanigan and two blocks from Jocelyn Turner and Maddie Kendall to give the. Braves a 16-1 lead.

The Braves took the second set 25-13. In the third set, the Braves battled back from 15-10 to tie the set at 20-20. The Braves took control of the set after a Kendall kill and then Anderson increased that lead to 23-20 with a kill of her own. The Braves took the third set and the match.

“I thought we focused when we needed to,” Head coach Traci Dyer-Townsend said. “Not in the beginning, so it took us, a little bit, to wake up. But then I was proud of their overall performance. I think we got it done. We kept it simple serving and passing game and um, it kind of took them out of their elements.”

Coach Dyer-Townsend continued, “ I think playing, focusing on us and doing our job well and we talk a lot about doing the simple things better. Serving and casting and then just being aggressive on, on offense. So it was nice to have Denver back tonight in the front row. That helped a lot.”

The Braves improved to 16-12 overall and 4-6 in Apollo Conference play. This week the Braves will face Springfield Southeast to start regional play.
