The Arcola Rotary Club announced the successful completion of a new Sensory and Communication Board at the Arcola Elementary School Pre-K playground, installed in April 2026. This project reflects a strong partnership between Arcola Rotary and the school, as well as the dedication of Rotary members to enhancing inclusive opportunities for local students.
The initiative was led and coordinated by Arcola Rotarians, who worked closely with school staff to bring the project from concept to completion. The board, featuring both English and Spanish communication tools along with sensory elements, allows children to express interests and engage in play by pointing to visual icons—helping overcome language and developmental barriers.
Arcola City Administrator Bill Wagoner played an important role by introducing the project concept to the Arcola Rotary Club and supporting members throughout the District Grant application process. With his guidance, the club successfully secured a Rotary District Grant, which matched funds raised by Arcola Rotary members and made the project possible.
While school staff assisted with installation and provided materials, the project was driven by Rotary’s leadership, organization, and funding efforts. The completed board prominently features Rotary branding, symbolizing the club’s hands-on role and their lasting legacy of investment in the Arcola community.
Arcola school officials expressed sincere appreciation for the enhancement to their playground, noting the meaningful impact it will have on students’ ability to communicate and interact.
Arcola Rotary Club President Mick Howrey emphasized that this project represents the everyday work of Rotarians. “Service Above Self is not just a motto—it’s a way of life,” Howrey said. “This sensory board is one example of how our members come together to support and strengthen our community.”
