MONTICELLO – The Arcola Eastern Illinois baseball League team suffered two close losses Sunday at Monticello High School’s baseball field, falling 4-1 and 5-1 against the White Heath Warriors. Arcola High Power has been within one (3-2 loss to Paxton in the first game of a doubleheader July 12) and now three and four runs of getting their first victory of the season. This is the best stretch of baseball for High Power this year.
Arcola, 0-16, plays in the end-of-the-season tournament at a time and date to be announced. White Heath improved to 4-8 with all four wins against Arcola.
In the first game, it was a three-run third inning for White Heath that was the difference. Arcola threatened in the third when the inning started with a walk and a single, putting runners on first and second with no outs. However, White Heath turned a 4-3 double play, but High Power had a runner on third when a fly out ended the threat.
The Warriors started their half of the third with one out when Dylan Brown was hit by a pitch. A double by Jack Buckalew scored Brown. Brayden Bruens reached on a bunt, putting runners on the corners for Brody Billedo, who grounded out to the shortstop L.J. Davis for the second out, but Buckalew scored. Jack Robertson walked, and Bruens scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead.
The first two Arcola batters in the fourth reached on a single and then a walk to Trevor Frohling. But a strikeout, a line out, and a ground out left the corners.
Arcola turned a double play to end the eighth and keep the score at 4-0.
The High Power got its run in the ninth when the first batter walked on a full-count pitch, and Gavin Hutchins singled to left, putting runners on first and third with no outs. Hutchins stole second, and with one out Dario Ayala grounded out, but drove in the lone run. The game ended on a foul out to first.
Both teams had five hits, and White Heath had the lone error. Arcola had two stolen bases, the only two in the game.
In the second game, it was three errors that cost Arcola as they did not allow a single earned run.
Arcola scored first in the second game in the second inning when an error was followed by a single by Ayala. A strikeout was followed by a ground out, which moved runners into scoring position. The second error of the game on White Heath allowed a run to score before the inning ended on a lineout.
White Heath wasted little time in getting the run back and more as they scored all five of their runs in the bottom of the third and all with two outs. Robertson started the inning with a single to right and Hunter Weeks followed with another single to right, but Robertson was out at third. A popup to the pitcher made two outs. However, the inning was kept alive by a single by Weeks with a single, putting runners at first and second. Bentley VonBehren reached on an error as Weeks scored. Another error allowed two runs, and a double by Buckalew scored Brown. Bruens singled to center to plate the final run of the game.
Arcola was held to three hits and walked six times, while the Warriors had seven.
