Bement Middle School and Cerro Gordo Jr. High Compete at Sectional Meet
Competing on Saturday, May 8 at the IESA Sectional 8 Class 1A track meet hosted by the St. Michael School (Siegel) at the Teutopolis Junior High School, the Bement Middle School track teams brought home several ribbons from the meet.
Winning individual sectional championships for Bement were Will Fuson in the seventh-grade boys 200-meter dash with a time of 28:46 and the 1600-meter run coming in with the winning time of 5:36.45. Gabby Block won the eighth-grade girls 100-meter hurdles in a time of 20.69 and the eighth-grade girls 400-meter dash with a time of 1:12.35.
The eighth-grade girls 4×400 meter relay team of Gabby Block, Marley Olson, Cassie Block, and Addie Roberts took first place coming in at 5:29.02 and the eighth-grade boys 4×400 meter relay team of Cliff Strack, Brayden Strack, Tyce Alumbaugh, and JP Brewer finished in first place with a time of 4:25.31.
Cerro Gordo individual sectional championship winners included Kaydon Waterhouse winning the seventh-grade discus throwing 120’ 01”, the shot put with a throw of 33’ 05”, and the 100-meter dash coming in at 14.80. Gavin Conour took first place in the eighth-grade long jump at 16’ 2.50”.
Bement Bulldogs track coach Andrew Brown stated, “It’s great to see the hard work the kids have put into it this year pay off. This group of athletes, both girls and boys, although small in numbers, are leaving a big impact in multiple sports. The core of the group was in cross country, basketball, and on the girls side volleyball. They have represented Bement well.”
He added, “Having the eighth-grade boys get second, eighth-grade girls third (with only two eighth graders) and the seventh-grade boys get fourth was pretty cool.”
