Staff Writer

The Mt. Zion girls soccer team went 1-1 last week. The Braves won their regional semifinal game 2-0 against Jacksonville and then lost in the regional final 6-0 against Chatham-Glenwood.

In the regional semifinal, the Braves scorers were Mackenzie Krieger and Wrigley Donahue. Maddie Kendall tallied an assist.

The Braves finish their season 17-6. Of those six losses, they came against three teams. Mahomet-Seymour (2) , Mattoon (3), Chatham-Glenwood (1).

“This season was about mixing a solid group of upperclassmen with a talented group of freshmen,” Head coach Jonathan Moore said. “Our team chemistry was outstanding and we were able to post a 17-6 record.”

The Braves lose eight seniors. Those seniors are Sabrina Bavo, Sophie Castro, Macie Fleming, Wrigley Donahue, Alexis Mallory, Katie Oliger, Autumn Plumstead and Tatum Stein.

“Our seniors were the true backbone of the group,” Coach Moore said. “They were positive leaders that we knew we could lean on in any situation. The three senior captains (Wrigley Donahue, Macie Fleming, and Katie Oliger) did a great job of leading both on and off the field.”

The Braves retain a young group that include leading goal-scorer Kendall, second-leading goal-scorer Krieger who also plays center-back, Sydney Howerton and playmaker and winger Boston Flanigan.
