The Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond boys cross country team finished in 4th in the team standings at the IHSA Class 1A Regional at Shelbyville last Saturday. That placing qualified these boys, from left to right: Nate Cogdill, Jacob Adcock, Caden Binder, Connor Edmonds, Logan Beckmier, Lyle Adcock, and Ryker Beckmier to run in the IHSA Sectional XC meet. That race will be on Saturday, October 29 at Dodds Park in Champaign. The ALAH Cross Country squads traveled to Shelbyville on October 22 to run the IHSA Regional event. Competing on an unseasonably warm fall day, the course winds through the woods and hills on the General Dacey Trail along the shores of Lake Shelbyville.
Off at 10am, the Knight’s distaff group sprinted out against 80 some other girls. In a race won in a quick 17:17 by Mabry Bruhn of Monticello, the Knight’s own Ruby Burton ran a solid 26th (21:46) to qualify individually for Sectional competition. The Lady Knights finished 9th just 12 points shy of moving on to the Sectional round as the top 7 teams advance. Running 2nd position for the Knights was Kimberly Krutsinger in 44th(23:06), her career 2nd best time. Emma Edwards completes her solid 4 year career in 50th(23:47). Lindsay Rohacs finishes her sophomore campaign in 64th(25:40). Evanger Wiley winds up her first cross country season in 70th(26:23) with Grace Romine right behind running another significant PR of (26:33).
Tolono Unity wins with an absurdly low score of 26. The defending state Champs are odds on favorites to win again at Detweiller on November 5th.
The boys race broke out of the starting boxes at 10:50. The hills of Dacey Trail and 80° Temps proved formidable for the runners. Martin Velcheck of St. Teresa led a tight pack at the mile in 5:00. He was joined by Tuscola’s duo of Hortin and Jackson as well as Logan Beckmier of ALAH. The second pack contained Lyle and Jacob Adcock just seconds behind. At the 2 mile juncture, the pair of Warriors along with Beckmier broke away. At the finish, Beckmier crossed in 3rd with an excellent 15:30 given course difficulty and heat. The Adcocks both run season best finishing strongly with Lyle in 11th(16:09) and Jacob 12th(16:10). Caden Binder fought of some leg cramps issues to finish in 43rd (18:39) while Connor Edmonds continues his comeback placing 58th(19:10). Nate Codgill and Ryker Beckmier complete the scoring in 76th(21:06) and 80th(21:37) respectively.
The Knights, who finished the regular season ranked 20th in the state, finish in a tie with Unity for 3rd behind St. T and Tuscola and ahead of Monticello. Each squad a top 20 state ranked group in this deep, talented regional.
The boys will have their work cut out for them to continue a string of state meet appearances as the SJO Sectional will be one of the deepest in the state. Top 6 teams from each Sectional advance to state. There will 8 to 10 state ranked teams running at Champaign’s Dodds Park near Parkland College.
