CGB High School Track and Field Teams Compete at Annual Tuscola Open

The Cerro Gordo Bement high school boys and girls track and field teams competed in the 38th annual Tuscola Open on Friday, April 19. This meet brings together some of the best track and field talent in the area and provides great competition for all. No team scores are kept for the meet.

The CGB boys placed in three events but those places were two firsts and an third. Sophomore Will Fuson had an outstanding night and was responsible for the two first place finishes with great times and PRs in both. He ran the 800 meters in 2:00.35 and the 1600 in 4:34.43.

Fellow distance runner and senior Dylan Howell picked up the third place in the 3200 in a time of 9:59.90. All of these times are under the IHSA state qualifying standards and both these boys and others on the team will be looking to surpass those standards at the IHSA Class 1A boys sectional which will be at Okaw Valley High on Wednesday, May 15. Events get underway at 4 p.m.

For the CGB girls, Caroline Hill placed in two individual events, the 400, third in a time of 1:03.81 and the 200, fifth at 28.64. For the other individual place, Skye Tieman placed sixth in the long jump with a leap of 15’ 0.25”. The 4 X 8 relay finished in third with Mariah Corpus, Hill, Cassie Block and Jillian Durbin running 11:29.95. The girls’ IHSA Class 1A sectional is fast approaching also and will be held on Thursday, May 9 hosted by Central A & M High School at Assumption.

Prior to the sectionals will be the 4th Annual Lincoln Prairie Conference track and field meet which will be held at Argenta-Oreana on Friday, May 3 starting at 2 p.m.
