The Mt. Zion baseball team went 1-3 last week, splitting an Apollo conference doubleheader with Mattoon and losing to Rochester and Teutopolis.
Against Rochester, the Braves went behind early 1-0 after the top of the first. Sam Driscoll led off the bottom of the first with a triple. With one out, Jackson Beiler hit a sac-fly that brought in Driscoll to tie the score at 1-1.
The Rockets scored a run apiece in the second and third inning to take a 3-1 lead. Aiden Weaver and Driscoll were walked in the bottom of the second to lead things off. Drew Hittmeier struck out and Beiler hit into a fielder’s choice.
With two out, Evan Hamrick hit a two RBI single to the right-field gap to tie the game at 3-3. The Rockets regained their lead scoring two runs of their own to take a 5-2 lead after four innings of play.
Kaebran Walker came in and relieved Zuber and struck out two batters and tossed a shutout fifth inning and the Braves scored one off an E2 to cut the Rockets lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth.
The Rockets scored five unanswered runs and went on to win it 10-4.
“Well, the schedule doesn’t do us any favors,” Head coach JD Arnold said. “It didn’t do us any favors two weeks ago either. We’re playing good baseball coming into the day and we didn’t play very good baseball today.”
The Braves fall to 7-8 on the season and 2-4 in Apollo Conference play. The Braves will face Pleasant Plains this week.
