CGB Track and Field Compete in Charleston High School Invitational

In his first indoor meet of the 2025 season, Bronco junior #12, Will Fuson runs with the pack on the first lap of the 1600 meters at the Charleston High School Indoor Invitational last Saturday. Will finished in eighth place in the race with a time of 4:45.13.

On Friday, March 7, the Cerro Gordo Bement girls track and field team took part in the 2025 Charleston High School Girls Indoor Invitational.

The boys’ team would compete in the boys meet on Saturday, March 8. Both events took place in Lantz Fieldhouse on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

Both meet featured over forty teams from both IHSA Class 1A and 2A schools. The meet was highly competitive with between twenty-two and eighty-five athletes in each event.

For the girls, Gabby Block was in two events, the shot put where she threw 23’ 8.75” and the 200 meters where she ran 31.68. Brooklyn Dupont took part in the long jump with a leap of 10’ 7.25”.

On the track, Addison Frantz ran the 60 meter hurdles in a PR of 12.20; Leilana Hood ran a 10.88 in the 60 meters Cassie Block had a PR of 2:56.66 in the 800 meters and Emilee Strack ran a 1:32.71 in the 400 meters.

On Saturday in the boys’ events, Will Fuson scored in the 800 meters with an eighth place finish and a time of 2:08.0. Will also ran the 1600 in 4:45.13.

Joining Will in the 1600 was Knox Shackleford who recorded a time of 5:40.08.

Other runners in the boys’ meet were J.P. Brewer in the 3200 meters in 11:59.24; Quentin Nevius ran both the 60 meters in 7.69 and the 200 in 24.79; Azul Mendez ran a PR of 1:01.21 in the 400; and finishing off the running events was the 4 X 4 relay that finished with a time of 4:26.30.

In the field events, Tyce Alumbaugh competed in the pole vault with an 11’ 0” vault and Azul Mendez had a PR of 16’ 4.5” in the long jump.

The boys will be in the Mt. Zion Indoor Invitational on Wednesday, March 12 and the girls will run at Mt. Zion indoors on March 20. Both squads open their outdoor season on Tuesday, April 1 at Sullivan.
