Representing the Illinois Society of Children of the American Revolution, Gov. Edward Coles Chapter DAR member Debra Sandercock brought members news about CAR (Children of the American Revolution). Founded in 1895, CAR is the oldest youth patriotic society in America. Like DAR and SAR, their lineage to a patriot who rendered service to the cause of American Revolution is necessary.
Each year the National Society CAR chooses a project to raise awareness and/or to give financial support. This year, they are partnering with the Tunnel to Towers Foundation to provide mortgage free Smart Homes to wounded first responders. The 2024-25 Illinois Society CAR brings state awareness of the Torstenson Youth Conservation and Education Center in Northern Illinois on the Pecatonica River.
The Stephen A. Douglas chapter once sponsored a CAR chapter led by DAR chapter member Helen McCown; the Okaw Valley Chapter was formed in 1955 with eight students and was disbanded during the 1960s. Currently, there is a chapter in Champaign; the one in Mattoon is currently under reorganization.
Two first grade children, accompanied by their teacher, Mrs. Molly Hughes, from the East Central Illinois Christian School in Newman, surprised the DAR chapter members by attending the meeting to recite, in unison, the lengthy patriotic poem “When You See the Stars and Stripes” by Bethany Roberts.
Members brought 19 stuffed handbags to be delivered to a women’s shelter in Champaign.
New members, Leanne Wichus, Monticello, and Heather Wienke, Tuscola, were formally inducted into the chapter and welcomed by the members.
The formal election of 2025-2027 chapter officers will be during the April meeting.
