CGB softball wins LPC game

CERRO GORDO – The week started off great as the Cerro Gordo/Bement softball team won its first Lincoln Prairie Conference game of the season with a season-high 22 runs in a 22-10 victory over Okaw Valley on April 7 at Cerro Gordo. However, the Lady Broncos dropped two non-conference games to LeRoy 15-0 on April 8 and a 19-4 contest to Warrensburg-Latham on April 9. LeRoy is the number six team in the latest Illinois Softball Coaches Association rankings and boasts a 14-1 record. CGB returned to LPC action last Thursday and lost 13-5 to Tri-County as the Lady Broncos fell to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

In the LeRoy game, which was called after four innings, due to the 15-run rule, the Lady Broncos had two hits, both doubles by Madisen Calllaway and Madelyn Sommers. Cerro Gordo/Bement took the lead against W-L 2-0, but the Cardinals scored eight in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good. JIllian Durbin and Sommers were 1-for-1 with a run batted in. Sommers also had a double. Rylan Petty was perfect in three at-bats with a double and two RBIs in the loss to Tri-County.

The Lady Broncos scored five runs in the first and never trailed in the game called after four and half innings due to the 10-run rule. CGB scored at least three runs in every inning. It was 5-2 going to the bottom of the second when the Lady Broncos scored eight runs as 13 batters went to the plate. The inning started off with three straight doubles by Callaway, Petty and Sierra Personette. After a walk to Maddie Gant and with one out Jillian Durbin received a base on balls. Sommers hit a two-run double as Personette and Gant scored for a 9-2 lead. With two outs and a 10-2 lead Callaway drove in two more runs with a single. She scored on a double by Brielle Puckett for a 13-2 advantage.

Jilian Durbin was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two of the team’s nine doubles. She also had a triple. Sierra Personette was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, while Sommers was perfect in two at-bats with a double and three RBIs to lead the Lady Broncos.

Mya Durbin was the winning pitcher. She threw 4 innings and allowed four hits and one earned run with nine strikeouts and one walk.
