A monthslong food drive to help those in need kicks off Saturday, Nov. 22, with a concert by The Halos at the Vault Art Gallery in downtown Tuscola.
The Halos, an acoustic group from Charleston, perform from 2 to 4 p.m. and highlight the Vault’s effort to gather non-perishable food items for the Social Action Ministry (SAM) Food Pantry, located inside the Tuscola United Methodist Church. Artists at the Vault unofficially started the food drive Nov. 1 and it will continue through Dec. 31, with all food and monetary donations going directly to the food pantry. Donation bins are located inside the Vault.
Vault artist Cindy Pringle volunteers at the SAM Food Pantry, which serves residents of Douglas County.
“I enjoy volunteering at the food pantry on Wednesdays and I am so thankful that food can be provided to individuals and families who need it,” Pringle said. “At a distribution event in early November we had more people at the pantry than I’ve seen this year. Clearly, the need is great.”
After Pringle posted about the pantry and the growing demand for food donations on her Facebook page, she got a reply from friend and musician, Abby Haughee, who suggested a free concert to benefit the hungry. Haughee is a member of The Halos, along with Karen Hart, Michael Brown, Wendy Meyer and Victoria Woollen-Danner.
“I thought it was a tremendous idea and got approval from the Vault board of directors to have the event. Artists at the Vault, as well as customers, have been making food donations since early November,” Pringle said. “No one should go hungry, especially during the holidays, and so we will continue to take in donations until the end of the year.
“And the concert is a great way to let everyone know the important role that food pantries play in helping to eliminate hunger in communities across the country,” she added.
The SAM Food Pantry is open from 7:30 to 10 a.m. every Wednesday. Go to www.facebook.com/SAMFoodPantryTuscola for more information. The Vault Art Gallery (www.facebook.com/VaultArtGallery) is located at 100 N. Main St., downtown Tuscola.
