Stephen A. Douglas Chapter Regent Bev McGee welcomed everyone in the Chapel to the dedication of a solar-powered flag pole and an American flag donated by the DAR Chapter. It was made possible because of a monetary grant given by Illinois Honorary State Regent Christina Bannon during her state regent’s term. Mrs. Bannon believed that DAR Chapters could help improve their communities so she offered a grant during her term of office to all Illinois chapters; 93 chapters (including ours) took advantage of her generosity.
As a member of the Fairfield Church Board, Kim McGee gave a history of the church that included his ancestors and their neighbors. After Chapter member Martha Burris publicly thanked those who made the dedication possible, she named the DAR chapter members who are buried in the Fairfield Cemetery. Nancy Hogan was the pianist for singing of patriotic music.
At the closing of the short program inside the chapel, the Stanton Burgett Legion Post 201, led by Wade Hales SGT at Arms, and assisted by Illinois DAR Honorary State Regent Christina Bannon, took over outside. Although the wind was fiercely blowing from the west, the American flag was raised for the first time at Fairfield Chapel as Justin Lee, Heritage High School Music Instructor played To The Colors on the trumpet.
One of several patriotic events scheduled for this year, the 250th anniversary of our country, a flag and flagpole for the 1869 Fairfield Chapel given by the DAR Chapter seemed appropriate.
Thanks to the cooperation of Rusty Barry Construction, the Fairfield Foundation, Newman Township and the Stanton Burgett Legion Post 201, the day and project was complete.
