ARCOLA – Quincy bound Brevyn Whisman and Hunter Drake led the Arcola offense as Whisman was 3-for-4 with a double and a triple and a run batted in, while Drake was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.
The Purple Riders got on the board right away against the team that had won nine consecutive games. Brody Phillips got things started with a single; Whisman doubled to right, moving Ronnie Vega, who was running for Whisman, to third. Jackson Griffith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hunter Drake singled on a full-count pitch to drive in two runs.
Leading 4-2 and entering the fifth inning the Purple Riders scored three runs as Whisman smacked the first pitch he saw to right field for a single, Griffith was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Whisman scored on a ground out by Hunter Drake. Jordan Gingerich singled to center, but a runner was out at third for the Purple Riders. No problem as Kaden Hohlbauch walked on a full-count pitch. With runners on first and second Brody Drake, Hunter’s brother, singled to center field. Hohlbauch scored on an error as Brody Drake moved to second for the five-run lead.
However, the Tigers answered with a three-run fifth of its own to make it 7-5.
Arcola turned a double play to end the sixth and in the seventh Westville’s Gavin Long doubled to right with one out. Gingerich, the Arcola pitcher at that time, got the next two batters to strikeout to end the game.
Brody Drake recorded the win allowing just one hit and one run in 2 ⅓ innings, while Gingerich earned the save pitching four and two thirds innings and allowing four runs on eight hits, but had six strikeouts and just one walk.
Whisman is batting .551 with a team-high seven home runs and 34 runs batted in, while Griffith is batting .407 with a team-high 24 walks. On defense he is tops in fielding percentage at .978.
