James W. “Jamie” Haynes, 41, was taken into custody on suspicion of murder. He was booked into the Douglas County Jail at 7a.m. Monday on a preliminary charge of first degree murder.

Found dead at the scene was Morgan “MJ” Harris. Douglas County State’s Attorney Robert Kosic said the alleged murder took place in Haynes’ residence at 303 S. Shirley St. in Newman.

Ms. Harris listed Arcola as her place of residence on her Facebook page. Her social media and Haynes’ social media indicate that they were in a relationship as of September 2021.

Kosic confirmed that a gun was used but said he could not disclose what type of gun. He said there are no other victims or suspects and no ongoing threat to the community.

A detention hearing has been set for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at the Douglas County Courthouse.

No other information was available Monday. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
