ALAH Ag Teacher Hannah Uphoff Honored Through Beginning Teacher Grant Program

ALAH High School Ag educator and FFA advisor Hannah Uphoff.

One group is helping address the Agricultural Education teacher shortage in Illinois with a grant program for beginning ag teachers.

In a surprise assembly last Monday at ALAH High School, Hannah Uphoff was selected as one of four new Agriculture teachers in the State of Illinois to receive recognition as a recipient of this teacher grant.

Uphoff applied for the grant program last May and was selected based on excellent efforts in the classroom as well as strong short and long-term personal and agriculture program goals.

Representatives from Illinois Farm Bureau, IAA Foundation, and the Facilitating Coordination in Agricultural Education (FCAE) were present to announce the award to Uphoff and her students.

Uphoff said, “Walking into the gym seeing my family and fellow teachers, I was shocked to say the least. I had no idea that I would be receiving this grant as I had filled it out in the spring and hadn’t expected to be one of the four recipients. I am so honored to have been selected as one of only four agriculture teachers from the state of Illinois to be given this opportunity! I could not have done it without the support of my family, who have always pushed me to reach for my goals as an educator and of course my students, who inspire me every day and teach me that the future of agriculture is in safe hands.”

She added, “Teaching agriculture has been something that I have known was for me since I was in the second grade. I know that I can say that I have made my past self-proud of where I am today. Agriculture is so vitally important to our communities and world and I am eternally grateful to play a part in educating the future of this industry.

Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond High School Principal Steffanie Seegmiller stated, “Arthur CUSD #305 is excited to announce that Mrs. Hannah Uphoff, an exceptional educator and leader in the district’s agriculture program, has been awarded the prestigious Illinois Agricultural Education Teacher Grant from the Illinois Farm Bureau. Since joining the district in the 2023-2024 school year, Mrs. Uphoff has made a transformative impact on the school’s agricultural and FFA programs, driving student engagement to unprecedented levels.”

Principal Seegmiller went on to say, “Covering a vast 252-square-mile area primarily composed of farmland and agricultural industries, Arthur CUSD #305 has long emphasized the importance of Career and Technical Education (CTE). The district’s agricultural and FFA programs have served as vital pillars in preparing students for successful careers in the industry. Since Mrs. Uphoff’s arrival, her passion for agriculture continues to strengthen our program.

With 88 active FFA members, the highest level of participation in the program’s history, Mrs. Uphoff has created a dynamic learning environment that fosters both academic and practical success. Her classes are so popular that they now have waiting lists, and her efforts to connect with and engage all students have made a lasting impact.”

Seegmiller continued, “Mrs. Uphoff’s unique role as our ag teacher allows her to influence students in ways few educators can. Her ability to inspire, motivate, and guide students is exciting. She is beyond deserving of this award, and we cannot wait to see how our agriculture and FFA programs will continue to flourish under her leadership. With her vision and dedication, there’s no doubt the future of Arthur’s ag and FFA programs will be brighter than ever. Arthur CUSD #305 is proud to celebrate this milestone and looks forward to seeing the continued growth and success of its agriculture programs, thanks to Mrs. Uphoff’s leadership and the support of the Illinois Farm Bureau.”

Seegmiller concluded, “First and foremost, one more HUGE congratulations to Mrs. Uphoff for being recognized as one of this year’s Agricultural Education Teacher Grant recipients! Second, thank you to everyone who played a role in pulling off the surprise announcement, we are proud to administer this program and support ag teachers in Illinois.”

Illinois agricultural education teachers completing their first year in the classroom are eligible to apply for this grant. The amount of the grant payment will increase annually, up to $10,000 total, if they meet the re-application process confirming they remain active as an agricultural education teacher in the state of Illinois.

The Illinois Farm Bureau, through its charitable arm, the IAA Foundation, created the Illinois Agricultural Education Teacher Grant Program. Illinois Farm Bureau immediately recognized the need and the value that supporting first year agriculture teachers had. All told, the program will fund 32 teachers over a 12-year timeframe.
