There are some things about Tuscola girls basketball that never seems to change.
On Monday night, the Lady Warriors entered the game with a level record of 3-3. In the first six games, the Lady Warriors have been powered by two players, namely Reese Davis and Sicily Moss.
Davis has scored 91 points, an average of 15.2 points per game. She has scored her points by draining 29-of-87 from the floor, which is a shooting percentage of 33.3 percent, and 24-of-32 from the charity stripe, which is 75 percent. Of her 29 field goals, nine were from beyond the arc.
Other stats include 31 rebounds and team-highs of 20 assists and 19 steals.
Davis has plenty of help in the form of Moss. Moss gives help where basketball players most need it: inside.
Moss averaging in double figures as well. Moss has drained 29-of-61 from the field, all of which were regulation buckets. In addition to her 47.5 percent from the field, she would also hit 81 percent of her free throws, draining 17-of-21. She would score 75 points and pull down 44 rebounds, respective averages of 12.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
Her 44 rebounds and 7.3 rebounds per game are both team-high. She also has 12 steals and three assists.
“Early in the season, we have had some encouraging signs,” said Michael Rosenbaum, the Lady Warriors head coach. “When we stared the season, this group of athletes did not have much varsity experience.”
Sawyer Cleland leads the team in blocked shots as she has 12 blocks.
No other athlete on the team has scored more than 23 points. Overall, in six games, the team has scored 280 points and pulled down 204 rebounds. They are hitting 39 percent of their shots from the floor, nailing 82-of-210 from the floor. They have drained 65-of-106 from the free throw line, which is 61.3 percent. They have hit 17 treys as a team. Other stats include 82 steals, 71 assists and 23 blocked shots.
“We need to get better defensively,” said Rosenbaum. “We are working toward keeping opposition players out of the paint. We also want to hit the boards hard and finish each possession with strong rebounding. It has been the focus of our team.”
The Lady Warriors have two games this week. This article will be turned in before the Monday night game. On Thursday, they will play a larger Class 3A team as the Ranoul Lady Eagles come to town. That is the theme of the week as Tuscola played Charleston on Monday night. Both games are scheduled with a start time of 6 p.m., which is the junior varsity start time.
On Monday, Dec. 15, the Lady Warriors will try to build on their Central Illinois Conference record by traveling to Warrensburg-Latham. They already have topped Shelbyville and a 1-0 in the league. Like the other games, the game against Warrensburg-Latham will start at 6 p.m.
