Arthur Christian three-pointers hurt Arcola boys in loss Monday

ARCOLA – With the temperature warming up outside the Arthur Christian Conquering Riders started hot, sinking five straight three-pointers after missing the first three-pointer of the game. Arthur Christian led 17-6 after the first quarter and led by as much as 14 in the first half (17-3). Arcola lost 53-37, falling to 11-14 overall. The Purple Riders have struggled lately, winning one game in the last six contests.
The Purple Riders did play Armstrong, a team that was 18-7 entering the contest. The non-conference game was played at the old Rossville Alvin High School, which is now the Rossville-Alvin Middle School. The Trojans won 43-37.
Arcola routed Blue Ridge 48-14 at Farmer City last Friday in a conference game, but dropped a tightly contested game with Heritage 47-43 February 3.
Monday: Arthur Christian at Arcola
Arthur Christian,coached by Greg Mast, entered the game making 233 of 807 (.289) from three-point range. However, the Conquering Riders sank 9-of-20 (.450) in the game, including the five in the first quarter.
Arcola faced a full-court zone press, but did not have trouble getting the ball down the court. The Purple Riders first basket occurred halfway through the first on a basket by Remi Roberts-McGeehon to make it 12-3. Kedrick Chupp, who made all three of his three-pointers in the opening quarter, made his final trifecta for a 17-3 lead.
The Purple Riders battled back to within eight on a three-pointer by Canton Wesch and Sawyer Maxwell. Kaden Hohlbauch ended the scoring in the first half to make it 24-15.
The second half started just as the game did as three-pointer by Cody Kuhns and Boston Mast made it 30-15 and AHS did not get closer than 14 the rest of the way. Arcola trailed by 14 on five different times in the second half before the Conquering Riders built their lead to 19, 47-28 with 2:48 left in the game.
Maxwell came off the bench and contributed 12 points to lead AHS, while Chupp led Arthur Christian with 17 points and six rebounds, while Wade Julius added 12.
Arcola was also hurt in the rebound department as the Conquering Riders grabbed 26 compared to 18.
Saturday: Arcola at Rossville vs. Armstrong
Arcola trailed just 6-4 after the first eight minutes and 15-12 at the half. However, Armstrong outscored the Purple Riders 13-6 in the third to lead 28-18. AHS outscored the Trojans 19-5, but it was not enough.
Maxwell led Arcola with 17 points as he continues to show improvement off the bench. Maxwell hit five three-pointers.
Gage Foster led Armstrong with 17 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter.
Friday: Arcola at Blue Ridge
Arcola outscored Blue Ridge in every quarter en route to the 34-point win, the largest of the season.
The Purple Riders led 30-9 at the half and outscored the Knights 12-2 in the third for a 42-11 advantage.
Canton Wesch led Arcola with four three-pointers and a total of 14 points.
February 3: Heritage at Arcola
Neither team led by more than six points in the game that featured 12 lead changes, including 11 in the first half.
Both teams made three-pointers to end the scoring in the first quarter with Heritage leading 13-12. They started the second period with another three and made a basket for an 18-13 lead. Arcola answered with a 7-0 run of its own to take a 20-18 lead on a three-pointer. Arcola led 22-21 at the break at Nancy Stiff Gymnasium.
The game was tied at 24 when Arcola took the largest lead of the game, 30-24. However, the Hawks answered with an 11-0 run to take a 35-30 advantage, including back-to-back three-pointers. Arcola never led again, but it was tied at 37 early in the fourth. The Purple Riders got to within one on three occasions, but could not overtake Heritage in the four-point loss.
Hohlbauch and Mayhall led AHS with 12 points each,while Heritage was led in scoring by Rylan White with 20 points. Brayden Jones added 18 in the game that had four ties.
