The fundraising arm of the District #305 Education Foundation, 100 People Who Care, held a meeting of shareholders on Monday, Feb. 2, at Los Gallos restaurant in downtown Arthur. Danny Powell and Marty Yeakel represented the Education Foundation and both shared some words as to what the purpose of the Foundation is and what the group does in supporting our schools and teachers.
Also present were three teachers who were recent recipients of grants given by the Education Foundation for assistance in their classrooms. Emma McClain shared how she used the money to buy books for her 6th grade English and Language Arts junior high classroom to encourage reading among her students. They have a goal to read 100 books this semester and are already well on their way to reaching that in just one month thanks to the library she has been able to build.
Stephanie Alexander, who teaches art at the grade school to all grades, kindergarten through 8th, also used her grant money to buy ‘how to draw’ books which she says her kids really enjoy. Much needed art supplies which are not in the school budget were also purchased with her grant money.
Ginger Voegel who is the ALAH High School Family and Consumer Science teacher (think Home Ec) used her money to purchase air fryers and can openers for her classrooms’ kitchens and the high school food pantry. She went on to explain that the food pantry at the high school is available to all students who request it.
Those at the meeting were very interested to learn how these teachers use the money granted to them and also a bit about the needs of the schools and the students.
District #305 Education Foundation awarded almost $7,300 last spring to 14 teachers for items like those mentioned above as well as many other needed supplies for their classrooms. If interested in helping our schools, you may become a member of 100 People Who Care which asks that you contribute $200 per school year or you can just contribute to the Education Foundation. The website for the Education Foundation can be found at u-knighted.org and both the Foundation and 100 People Who Care have their own facebook pages.
For more information about the food pantry at the high school or the backpack program and how you can help with those, contact ALAH High School at 217-543-2511 or the grade school at 217-543-2109.
The Education Foundation greatly appreciates those who are interested in being a part of supporting our schools and our students.
