ARCOLA – Tony Manna of Zionsville, Ind and a former Arcolian, won the 5K (3.1 miles) Arcola Broom Corn Festival race Sept. 7 with a time of 17:49.5, which was 1:04.1 better than second place Beau Edwards, a 2022 Arcola grad.
It was Manna’s 10th 5K win as he also won the race in 2008-2010; 2012; 2014-17; 2021 and now 2024. His best time was 17:29.2 in 2015.
Edwards has won the last two races as well as 2018 and 2019. His best time is 17:15.01 in 2019.
Winning the female division in the 5K was a first timer in Arcola’s Martha Rodriguez Garcia of Arcola with a time of 21:31.1 on a cool morning with temperatures in the low 50s. It was the slowest winning time since 2008 when Camargo’s Rebekah Hopkins won it in 21:51. Garcia’s time was 1:06.5 better than 15-year-old Cortney Yoder of Arthur.
A total of 215 finished the 5K and 25 runners that had signed up did not run.
In the 10K Urbana’s Bram Osterhout defended his time with a time of 31:39.5. Last year he won with a time of 31:34.5, which was the best time since Rockford’s Criag Young ran a 31;20 in 1983. Osterhout won by a whopping 5:25.8 over Lextington’s (Mattoon grad) Nicholas Heller, who has won seven times (2015-2022 not including the COVID year).
A new winner in the female category was Urbana’s Amy Pristovnik, who ran the race in 46:18.8 which was 2:25 faster than the second place runner Kaylynn Azer of Champaign.
A total of 57 runners ran the 10K with three additional runners that registered, but did not run.
A recreational 5k walk was also held and no times were given for those participants.
