ARCOLA – In the final game of the 2024 portion of the girls basketball season the Arcola girls basketball team knocked off Heritage in a Lincoln Prairie Conference game last Thursday at Nancy Stiff Gymnasium.
The Lady Riders enter the Dieterich Holiday Tournament (Dec. 26) with a 6-4 overall record. They are 3-1 in the LPC, good for a tie for third with Tri-County.
Arcola led 13-6 after the first quarter and outscored the Hawks 20-8 in the second quarter to lead 33-14 at halftime as Kacie Sisk scored 14 points, including two three-pointers in the period.
The Lady Riders went on to win by 24 points.
Sisk led the way with 25 points.
Arcola was coming off a big 40-26 victory over Tri-County, a team that had only one loss prior to the game.
“I wasn’t worried about a let down,” said Arcola coach Corey Roberts. “I feel like our kids have turned the corner and we are very focused on the task at hand. I feel like the kids are really bought in right now and know that we had some let downs early this year and we can’t continue that.”
Roberts felt everyone played well, but did add this,” I think Ema Simpson played really well. She has continued to get better every game.”
Arcola is the No. 4 seed in the eight team Dieterich Holiday Tournament and finished third last season.
“Going into the tournament I feel really good about where our team is physically and mentally,” said Roberts. “We continue to get better and better. Our girls have really bought into the defensive game plan. We’re giving up 30.5 points a game and will continue to get better and better.”
Arcola is in Pool A with top seeded and tied for No. 5 in the Associated Press Class 1A rankings, Brownstown/St. Elmo, a team Arcola plays at 4 p.m. Friday a few hours after playing Casey-Westfield at 1 p.m. The tournament starts Thursday against South Central at 1 p.m.
