The Newman City Council approved a 1% sales tax, effective July 1.
The Council discussed the change at last month’s meeting, having concerns about motivations behind a potential adoption. A grocery tax was also discussed.
As a result of the discussions the sales tax was approved while the grocery tax was not, which was proposed at 1% as well.
Most Council members had concerns about already rising grocery prices.
The Council also opened bids regarding a new generator for the old school building as well as a new gymnasium floor.
Finally, a resident had concerns about installing solar panels on his property within city limits. Mayor Dennis Kibler noted that there were no ordinances in place that restricted the use of solar panels.
