The Tuscola girls’ basketball team improved to 10-7 after a 2-0 start to the new year, defeating Villa Grove 61-24 and Unity 44-33.
“Going 2-0 this week was a great way to start the year,” said head coach Mike Rosenbaum. “The girls had a nice week of practice in spite of missing a couple days of school, and their efforts were rewarded with two wins this week.”
Against Villa Grove, Taylor Gordon scored 17 points (8-11) with five rebounds and three steals for the Lady Warriors. Ava Boyer scored 10 (4-9) along with six assists, five rebounds, and five steals. Olivia Wallace also contributed with nine points (4-7) and three rebounds.
As a team, the Lady Warriors shot 26-59 (44.1%) from the field and 2-6 (33.3%) from the free throw line.
“We came out a bit rusty on the defensive end but were fortunate that they didn’t take advantage of their face-cuts. We came out much more focused in the second quarter and did a good job of building a substantial lead,” Rosenbaum said.
In Tuscola’s win against Unity, Reese Davis led the way in a well-rounded performance, scoring 11 points (4-12) along with seven rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Wallace registered a double-double with 10 points (4-8) and 16 rebounds while Boyer scored seven points to go along with six assists, five steals, and four rebounds. Allison Pettry contributed with seven points (3-16), three rebounds, and three steals of her own.
Tuscola was 18-57 (31.6%) from the field as a team and 3-7 (42.9%) from the charity stripe.
“We always know that it will be a competitive game. It’s one of those games where record does not matter and both teams are going to compete and play hard,” Rosenbaum said. “I was pleased with how well we executed on the defensive end, as well as how well we took care of the ball. We also dominated both ends in the rebounding category, which bought us some extra possessions and carried us to victory. Saturday was probably our best effort and execution since pre-Hoopla, while our offense did not see a significant drop-off from our Hoopla performances. A complete, total team win with balance scoring – all things that will lead us to success in our upcoming conference tournament.”
The Lady Warriors return to action in a home game against Clinton on Thursday.
