The Tuscola Lady Warriors basketball team went 1-2 on the week, picking up their win against Tri-County and falling to St. Theresa and St. Anthony.
The week kicked off against St. Theresa, where the Lady Warriors fell three points short, 38-35. Taylor Gordon (4-10) and Ava Boyer (3-8) led Tuscola in scoring with 10 points apiece while Reese Davis tallied seven (3-9) with five rebounds and four steals.
The Lady Warriors shot 13-38 (34.2%) and 1-8 (12.5%) from the line.
“Tough week as we played some of the top teams in 1A in Cissna Park and St. Teresa – both of which got top seeds in their regional,” said head coach Mike Rosenbaum. “With that being said, we showed we can hang with the best in the state as we took both teams to the wire. At St. Teresa, we struggled to move and take care of the ball, and props to the Bulldogs for pressuring our guards and making it difficult to run offense. Despite being down 11 midway through the 4th, our girls never quit and were able to cut it to two with a chance to tie it with under 40 seconds to go. Games like these will help us in regionals which will start in a week.”
The Lady Warriors then ran away from Tri-County, winning 66-35. Davis scored 18 points (7-10) along with nine assists and six steals in the outing while Allison Pettry scored 15 (6-9). Gordon scored 13 points (5-12) while Boyer paced Tuscola with six points (2-8), seven steals, and six assists.
As a team, Tuscola shot 26-52 (50%) and 5-9 (55.5%) from the free throw line.
“Saturday was a big bounce-back opportunity for us with Tri-County coming to town, and it was a breath of fresh air for our girls. We came out red-hot offensively creating turnovers and scoring in transition, but it took a quarter for our defensive execution to catch up. Once it did, our offense didn’t let up. The ball moved extremely well against their zone which gave us a lot of open looks and driving gaps to exploit, which I was pleased to see the girls take advantage of their opportunities. 24 assists on 26 buckets is proof of how well we shared the ball.”
The Lady Warriors rounded out their week with a 61-31 loss against St. Anthony. Olivia Wallace scored seven points (3-6) to lead the Lady Warriors. Boyer scored six (1-11) along with six assists and four steals. Davis scored five (2-4) and passed three assists.
As a team, the Lady Warriors shot 12-39 (30.8%) and 4-6 (66.6%) from the charity stripe.
“We knew going into the game that they were a talented group that would guard well, and that the keys to the game were going to be to limit our turnovers and we had to win the rebounding battle. We dug ourselves a 20 point hole in the first half on account we got out-rebounded by 10 and had 13 turnovers. We did a better job in the second half of taking care of the ball, but the gap was too large. We have a big opportunity to bounce back on Thursday with a conference win for senior night and to gear up for a regional at our place.”
The Lady Warriors moved to 15-13 on the season after the three-game stretch.
